OUR WORK

Tut

Mini Series, 6 episodes
1000 shots

Mandate:

Who doesn’t love an historical epic series with battles, love and treachery? It means for us a lot of blood, fire, explosions, battles and crowd duplications. We also created entire CG environments; desert, cities, pyramids to take you back to the pharaoh’s Egypt. It was a very ambitious project packed with VFX and we are so proud and grateful to have been part of it.

A science fiction show always brings some very exciting work for a company like us. We got to develop the look of the ship and many digital environments. Like we always do, we got involved from the get go. Trying to build what was in Phil Levens head was quite an adventure and we think we really surpassed ourselves with a very ambitious pull through the entire ship all in CG.

Our friends at MF approached us to help them on the annual L.A. screening of Sony Picture entertainment. The opening part of their show! We took on the task from design to final delivery. The result was a 12K projection on a multiple screen setup with a 3D time-lapse of the Sony studio lot being built. A metaphor of their grandiose contribution to the art of cinema and television. Cool project!

OUR TEAM

The most important thing to us is
building products people love.

SEBASTIEN BERGERON

VFX Supervisor / President

Seb can’t help but surround himself with talented people. His natural out-of-the-box thinking will trigger your creativity. His motivation for harnessing complex projects now comes with experience. Everything that goes on in his head comes with sound effects and powerful images, making him an outstanding storyteller.

PHILIPPE THIBAULT

Digital Effects Supervisor / VP

Phil does everything the same way; with passion, conviction and simplicity. He makes the Folks world go round. He gets it done, no matter what we throw at him. He is the man behind the scenes and he has a say in everything we do… and we mean everything! Most importantly, he keeps our Folks happy and you can count on him at all times.

MATTHEW BELBIN

Digital Effects Supervisor

Matt is the man. They don’t make them like him anymore. Describing what he does and how much he contributes would be impossible, so we won’t even try. A graphic chart might do it! With talent, creativity and stamina as the variables, he would be way, way off the chart. Never mind. You need to work with him to understand what we mean.

AMELIE POITRAS

Producer / Financial Director

Believe us, we looked everywhere for the most user-friendly $$$ person we could get. We’re happy to report that we found her! If you haven’t fall in love yet, wait until you meet her. And if you like to negotiate, well, bring it on! She is tough as hell. She is made of stone. You know, the expensive kind.

OUR PROCESS

hello_1

HELLO

Talk to us about your project. We love inspired people who put projects together. At Folks, we are passionate about our jobs and we get fuelled up by creating great images. We make things happen easily and can help you visualize your pictures and your process. We will team up with financial experts to talk about money and guide you through all the savings the Quebec Tax Credit Program has to offer. So let’s talk!

brainstorm_3

BRAINSTORM

Brainstorming is a big part of our process. When we put our creative brains together, they perform multiple feats! It is truly fascinating when you take a project on paper and get everybody together to share ways to make it happen. The artists on our team harvest many outside interests like: sculpture, photography, illustration and design, which help us spring unexpected ideas and make us think outside the box.

storytelling_2

STORYTELLING

Each time we read a script, we’re reminded of the true master we need to serve: the story. That’s right, we love to tell a story. We offer innovative VFX-based solutions to get you there faster, in a more spectacular or touching way. Fear not, we never do it at the expense of the story you’re trying to tell. We know it’s the truth of the story that makes it so engaging and memorable. That’s what storytelling is all about.

budgeting_4

BUDGETING

Meet FranX. With the help of our pal FranX, we’ve got our bidding process down to a science. Let’s be real, we’re talking about numbers here. You will get your price quickly. A real price: not one that will double before the end of the project. FranX does it all, including breakdowns on a clean interface to show you everything you need to know about our approach. But it’s all behind the scenes that FranX works his magic.

concept_5

CONCEPT

To get your troops inspired, help your project find its legs and to capture all the feelings that you aim to evoke, there’s “art.” Concept art. We do pictures that are quite literally worth a thousand words. Complete with storyboards, concepts, look books, artistic direction and topped off with our unique approach to it all! We will even get these pictures framed for you when you end up falling in love with them.

filming_6

FILMING

Shooting VFX can be considered a daunting process. Our role, is to plan and communicate this process so well that it’s easy, efficient and confusion-free for all involved. Using pre-vis techniques or simple storyboards, we quickly illustrate what needs to be done, reducing the number of lengthy interventions on set. Our experienced supervisors understand the dynamics between production reality and post capacity.

vfx_editing_7

VFX EDITING

There can be no storytelling without editing. Period. That’s why it is one of our top priorities. Now, more than ever, an editing department is the creative and organizational hub of any project. From pre-visualization to final delivery, we are obsessive about constantly seeing our shots in context. Not only do they all have to look real, but they need to cut well. Like a hot knife through butter.

3D_animation_8

3D ANIMATION

This is by far one of our favourite tools. I mean, what is not to like about creating visual effects using 3D rendering? Suddenly, everything becomes possible: realistic, out–of–this-world creatures, natural elements, props, buildings, crowds, cars, flying toasters, the apocalypse, you name it! The world is your oyster (yes, we can do oysters too). Go ahead. Imagine it. We can create it for you.

matte_painting_9_fr

MATTE PAINTING

God is in the details, so we’ve made a pact with him. We can create the most beautiful or the craziest paintings. We can take you back in time or way into the future, literally anywhere in the world or even out of this world.  We also pride ourselves on helping you find ways to create environments that you never thought you could afford to build. Give us a green screen and let our imaginations run wild.

compositing_10_fr

COMPOSITING

When it all comes together. Master chefs on our team seamlessly bring together each beautifully crafted element and blend it with live-action footage. Let’s be honest, our compositors are image tyrants. Details are noticed, reviewed, pointed out, corrected, sent back, improved, fine tuned, analyzed, licked – repeat backwards and forwards until it’s really, really, really good. Should we send it to our client for review?
